Fall festivals on Cape Cod

As innkeepers of our small quaint 7 room Cape Cod bed and breakfast, we are always telling our guests that fall is the absolute best time to come visit Cape Cod. The waters are still warm, most of the crowds are gone and a full season of events blooms under the changing colors of autumn for all to enjoy.  There are too many events to list here and so we share a few of our favorites.

If scallops are your favorite seafood then the 41st annual Bourne Scallop festival on September 24-26 is the place for you to be.

What started as a small festival organized by local fishermen has blossomed into a “sea foodies” celebration; over 3 tons of deep fried scallops, plus rides and games, craft shows and plenty of nightly entertainment.

We love to visit the Edward Gorey House in South Yarmouth. There is something about the dark, forbidding  style that Gorey was famous for in his illustrations that still entertains.

On October 30th from 6-9 pm the center is transformed into a Victorian age scene with vivid sets from PBS Mystery series where  Gorey contributed his memorable drawings. The festival also includes a fur coat auction from Gorey’s own fur coats. Paradoxically, proceeds from the auction benefit animal welfare and protection.

The tenth annual Wellfleet Oysterfest is a world famous event and brings many visitors to to  Cape Cod, be sure to book early, especially if you enjoy a fresh oysters.  With local food vendors and  raw bars,  everyone can enjoy a fresh shucked oyster. There is a definite excitement in the air as everyone goes around to all the tents to pick out the best looking oyster and cheering on their favorite shucker in the “shucking contests”.

One of our Brewster by the Sea massage therapists donates her time at the festival to massage the weary shucker’s arms. Last year the winner opened 24 oysters in two minutes and five seconds. The Oyster festival runs from October 16-17

Nantucket Restaurant Week runs from September 27 to October 3rd and features superb cuisine at nearly 30 distinguished dinner establishments. With menus especially designed for the week restaurants participating in the event delivers the ultimate for everyone seeking savory, seaside delights.

So as the days are getting shorter, think about a Cape Cod getaway. Brewster by the Sea is the perfect place to relax with a fireside couples massage, to savor the farm to table breakfasts and to have fun at the many local festivals running this fall.
