About Our Historic Cape Cod Bed and Breakfast
Donna and Byron bought The Brewster, MA Farmhouse inn in 2003 and have since rebuilt much of the property and the B&B business to offer first-class, alternative lodging accommodations. We immediately changed our name to Brewster by the Sea Inn & Spa to reflect our desire to be a rare gem of simple elegance.
We live by a few basic business/hospitality philosophies:
- We continuously work to exceed your expectations.
- We believe in old-fashioned
- Our motto is “Fine Lodging is in the Details”
- Breakfasts are familiar yet gourmet. They are old-fashioned favorites, prepared with the freshest ingredients.
- We strive to make our onsite licensed spa meet the level of pampering our guests would hope to receive on any getaway.
About your Innkeepers: Elizabeth Newcomer, Donna & Byron Cain and Harrison too!
Elizabeth is the newest addition to the Brewster by the Sea team, having recently moved to the Cape from Arlington, Virginia. She graduated from James Madison University in 2012 with a degree in Hospitality Management from the College of Business and after school, went to work at a private country club outside of Washington, DC. During the 3+ years Elizabeth worked in the private club industry she had many opportunities to learn about fine dining service and event management but something was missing…an outlet for her passion for being in the kitchen and cooking for others.
Moving to Cape Cod and embarking on the journey of being a bed and breakfast innkeeper was the start of a grand new chapter in the adventure of Elizabeth’s life. She has the support of family and friends home in the DC Metro area as well as that of Donna, Byron & Harrison too (along with the whole BBTS team). Elizabeth is having the time of her life exploring all that Cape Cod has to offer from the beaches and nature trails, to the shopping and of course the restaurants and much, much more. She looks forward to bringing a new perspective to Cape Cod fine lodging and fostering the magical ambience that guests enjoy during their stay at Brewster by the Sea.
Donna and Byron moved from Houston, Texas in 2003 where they raised their family. Taking a broad leap in life, they left their “normal jobs” (with benefits no less) to become innkeepers on Cape Cod.
The present decor and hospitality are European-inspired and derived from Donna’s former job as a furniture buyer. Her travels brought her to quaint inns and hotels in Europe and she was enthralled with both the simple, elegant decor and the comfortable European hospitality. When Donna and Byron traveled to Norway visiting the Ekornes chair factory on the Fjords, the idea of creating an inn with this type of ambiance was born.
Breakfasts continue to be a special time at the inn with many new recipes offered and guests’ favorites always remaining. Blueberry pancakes and apricot scones continue to be the most requested breakfast, and Croissant Sunday has become a recent favorite! Raspberry jam-making continues to be a summer tradition, and we love to see our guests expression when they enjoy a piece of homemade bread smothered with this delicious jam made from the inn’s raspberry patch.
Byron was born and raised in the mountains of Wyoming (you’ll occasionally see him wear a really spiffy pair of cowboy boots and belt buckle) where he evolved a true love for the outdoors and nature. A career as a geophysicist allowed him to travel the world from China to the North Slope, from Nigeria to Columbia. Later, combining the love of earth sciences with all things technical, he formed a large group of software developers to build complex data recording and analysis systems. Byron’s technical knowledge has been invaluable with the unending inn repairs, updates and renovations. He also enjoys learning about the stars, photography and has a constant thirst for knowledge. You’ll see many of his books scattered throughout the inn along with some of his photographs on the walls.
Donna was born in the Berkshires and spent many years catering in that area. Her travels later brought her to Houston where she moved into the furniture buying world. Byron and Donna later met at a pot luck dinner and the fairy tale began; being in love ever since and having raised three wonderful children. The youngest Nathan, lives on Cape Cod and helps with our inn maintenance on the weekends. April, the middle daughter, graduated from the University of Houston as an architect and recently started a new on-line store called the Boston General Store. She lives in Boston with her husband Matt. Our oldest daughter Jennifer is a dedicated teacher and lives in Dallas with her husband Darin and our new grandson Trenton (life is good:). Our children come and go from the inn, coming home when they need some home cooking and love. We both think that is exactly how it should be in life!
The inn has hosted many elopements, birthdays, anniversaries and special getaways, and we are honored to have been apart of so many special occasions.
